Outrigger Canoeing

Just imagine - you & five others, your coach, a 45-foot canoe, a wooden paddle, breathing in all that oxygen, and paddling your way through an exhilarating morning.

Outrigger Canoeing is the magic workout: quick, cheap, social, easy to get to, and fun for any fitness level. Really - it's not a race, so no one else in the canoe cares how fast you're paddling...or even knows, actually. Everyone in the canoe rows together, but some people row stronger than others and it all still works. (Bottom line: you don't have to have the back muscles of a Hawaiian competitor to enjoy this sport!)

But it gets better - because both San Francisco & Redwood Shores have super clubs that love new members. Take the Adventurous outrigger clinic once or twice, then join the free women's club in San Francisco or the inexpensive co-ed club ($150 a year) in Redwood City. You'll be on the mailing list, get invitations to the twice weekly paddles, and then just sign-up to join the canoe when you're available. Bring friends, they're free too. (For San Francisco, if you're really into it, you can officially join the canoe-owners group and pay a small fee to help maintain the canoes.) These clubs are very welcoming to new members and love sharing the fun (workout) of outrigger canoeing!

5 Great Reasons to try Outrigger Canoeing:

1. Almost anyone can get the hang of it immediately and experience the thrills and rush!

2. It’s a tremendous workout that kind of creeps up on you while you’re having a blast in the water.

3. Being surrounded by 5-12 other people gives beginners a great sense of confidence and security.

4. People not currently in the best of physical shape can still do it with consistency and enjoyment.

5. The water is a magical, rejuvenating place.

Things to Know
Q: Why is the Redwood Shores class $50, and the San Francisco class $40?

A: Our Redwood Shores class is 4-hours long, including a 1/2-hour orientation where the group uses special canoe-like benches to work on paddling technique. Then there are two on-water sessions with a beach feedback session in between.

The San Francisco class is shorter; it's a 2-hour session, starting with an on-beach instruction in paddling technique while each student sits right in the canoe. Then it's out onto the Bay for the full 1-1/2 hour paddle.
